Remember Me Thursday: Every Life Deserves to Be Remembered

There are some animals you never forget. Not because you knew them the longest, but because they changed something in you.
If you’ve been involved in rescue for any amount of time, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Years can go by, and then out of nowhere you’ll see a photo, hear a name, or drive past a place that reminds you of them. Suddenly you’re remembering the dog who finally learned to trust people, the tiny kitten who fought so hard, or the senior cat who just wanted a quiet place to nap.
Those memories have a way of staying with you. I find myself thinking about Swan, Daisy, and Bennington every Remember Me Thursday.
The photos throughout this article are of Foster Army animals we said goodbye to last year. Every one of them was loved, every one of them mattered, and every one of them left a lasting mark on our rescue. We hope you’ll remember them with us today.
Rescue Changes You
One of my favorite parts of rescue is watching an animal realize they’re safe. It’s hard to describe unless you’ve seen it happen. Sometimes it’s a dog who finally lets their guard down enough to wag their tail or a cat who decides your lap isn’t so scary after all. Those little moments are easy to miss, but they’re the ones I remember.
Of course, not every story ends the way we hope. Some animals come to us carrying years of neglect. Others are simply too sick by the time help reaches them. Those days are heartbreaking, and I don’t think anyone who works in rescue ever gets used to them.
People sometimes ask how we keep going after losing an animal. The truth is, I don’t think you ever stop carrying them with you. You just learn to let those memories remind you why the work matters.

Why We Remember
I’ll admit, there are animals I still think about years later. Not because I feel guilty or wonder what we could have done differently. Rescue will humble you pretty quickly. You learn that you can’t fix everything, no matter how badly you want to. I remember them because they mattered.
Some were with us for months. Others were only in our lives for a few days. The amount of time never seemed to matter. They all left something behind.

When people ask me what Remember Me Thursday means, I don’t think about it as a day that’s only about loss. I think of it as a chance to slow down and remember why we started doing this in the first place.
Every animal who crosses our path teaches us something. Some teach patience. Some teach resilience. Some remind us to celebrate the smallest victories because sometimes those are the biggest ones we get. Those lessons stay with you long after the animals are gone.
The Best Way to Honor Them

Lighting a candle has become a beautiful tradition, and I hope you’ll take a moment to do that this year. But I also think the animals we’ve lost would want us to keep looking forward.
Whenever someone tells me they finally decided to foster, or they adopted a senior dog they never would have considered a few years ago, I can’t help but smile. Those moments remind me that people really can change an animal’s future, often without realizing how much of a difference they’re making.
Rescue has taught me that one person is enough to change one life. And sometimes that’s all it takes. One family opens their home, one volunteer gives up a Saturday morning, or one person shares a photo online that reaches exactly the right adopter. That’s how lives change. Not because one person saved every animal, but because a lot of people each chose to help one.
Every Life Deserves to Be Remembered
After all these years, I still wish every story ended with an adoption photo. I wish every animal found the family they were waiting for. I wish we never had to say goodbye sooner than we expected. But rescue doesn’t work that way.
What it has taught me is to celebrate the wins, grieve the losses, and never let either one stop us from showing up the next day. The animals we’ve lost aren’t the reason I keep doing this work. The animals who are still waiting are.
Remember Me Thursday gives us a chance to pause and think about the lives that touched ours. Then, when the candles are out and the day is over, we get back to work helping the next frightened dog or abandoned kitten. I think that’s the best way we can honor the ones we’ll never forget.
